An efficient synthetic route, characterization and antimicrobial evaluation of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) Schiff base complexes

ABSTRACT. The synthesis of Schiff base compound derived from 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and o-phenylenediamine via solvent-assisted mechanochemical in the presence a small amount dimethylformamide as liquid-assisted solvent was reported. Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) Zn(II) complexes were synthesized characterized by powder x-ray diffraction, infra-red spectroscopy, differential scanning colorimetry, thermogrametric analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis CHNS/O macro-analysis. According to infrared spectral strong band spectra at 1617 cm-1 assigned azomethine v(C=N) stretching vibration. In complexes, it shifted lower frequency regions, indicating formation desired compounds. DSC thermogram showed single sharp peak 158 oC, which is attributed melting or phase transition. As revealed TGA, obtained solid compounds containing some amounts water molecules. powder-XRD that patterns different starting materials, constituents changed into product. antimicrobial activity results for selected bacteria fungi have higher than base. Furthermore, found be more effective against fungal isolates those bacteria.
